And under new ownership. Let’s do things a little differently now. Instead of submitting bands all the time, pick a band, and share your opinion with us? If you love them, hate them, love one album that they released, but loathe everything else? What if you just really love/hate a musician? Well, this is where you express yourself! All you have to do is submit!

Arguably one of the more popular Finnish melodic death metal bands. They started out sounding influenced by black metal and atmospheric metal, but now are releasing albums that are undeniably more thrash inspired. Their first three albums are what allows them to remain notable inspiration for other bands, but with the complete and utter shit they’ve been releasing lately, such as Blooddrunk, where it literally sounded as if the members were drunk. Follow the Reaper was probably their peak, pleasing any power metal fan with with solo’s that don’t make your ears bleed, heavy riffs, and the technical neoclassical keyboard. The more albums they release, the less inspired everything sounds, less drive. As far as lyrics go, they’ve never, ever had brilliant lyrics, it’s always been some half ass attempt to express hatred and anger, nothing original there, just sounds like an angsty teenager writing in their journal.

Let’s talk a little bit about the members. First of all, this is another band that relies partially on ‘sex appeal’. Alexi, for whatever reason, attracts women -and men- of all ages for no reason whatsoever. Now, despite his ‘sex appeal’, he hardly is the most original soloist. His vocals weren’t half bad- half the time. After awhile it just sounds like a tortured cat, and he’s pretty much completely lost all aggression he once had. Roope seems to have the upper hand as far as soloing goes, but he’s not as ‘pretty’ so he doesn’t get half the hype(but he gets more recognition than Alexander ever did). Janne’s keyboarding is sometimes mildly talented, but other times it’s just completely corny and either over done, or not necessary. Jaska started out strong, but over time he’s somehow manages to fall into the whirlwind of only thrash drumming. Now for Henkka, well as goes for many bands, he is simply always lost in the mix.

Mediocre band that has had their good albums, but are deteriorating (and not fast enough). If you’re in love with this band, you’re either just starting to listen to ‘metal’, one of their ‘die hard’ fans who wouldn’t care if they recorded themselves taking shits and mixed in melodies in between, or you simply have tunnel vision and want to fuck Alexi.

So do you guys like Dio? And the albums he produced with Black Sabbath?

A majority of his material is good, Dehumanizer wasn’t very solid though. For someone who’s music career spanned 40+ years, he was fairly consistent, even though he spanned a lot of styles and genres. His voice didn’t drop off and sound like shit like most musicians do after only 20 years.

Good submission, I applaud you.

First, let me say this will surprisingly be one of those few and far between posts we will make that has little to no negativity behind it, so enjoy it while you can. With that being said, Crimson II is pretty good, but I don’t understand the hype behind it. I’m not bashing it whatsoever, I just don’t understand why that is seemingly the only thing this band is known for, either that or Crimson. Their first few releases are much more deserving of that praise, simply because it was rather groundbreaking and original material. Edge of Sanity is probably one of the most horribly underrated death metal bands in my opinion. Rarely mentioned, even more rarely praised, at least in my experiences. I feel like they could deserve more respect and recognition, they were too unique and influential too be swept under the rug like they are.

Reverend Bizarre?

Reverend Bizarre were a unique band I’d say, they blended the styles of older doom like Pentagram, Witchfinder General, etc. and added their own modern touch. Good for them. I do think the overall idea and sound they went for was fairly alright, their downfall was being too repetitious to the point itwould drag out what would have been a great idea on its own into a drawn out mess. There are Sunn O))) songs that can keep my attention better than some of Reverend Bizarre’s more drawn out material. One thing I will end this with and praise them for as well, is that their cover’s of Dunkelheit by Burzum and The Gate of Nanna by Beherit were great, they completely made it their own to the point that it could almost challenge the originals.

Hardcore, yes was originally punk influenced, however dowadays hardcore, deathcore, metalcore,ect is metal influenced. Trust me I know my music probably better than you. Yes some hardcore is still punk influenced but progressive hardcore and boston hardcore are more metal influenced than punk influenced. Deathcore is actually influenced by death metal, and metalcore is influenced by heavy metal, just saying. I knew you would turn my words on myself to make me look like an idiot.

Just so you know core is a sub genre of metal. So saying grind core bands like napalm death are not metal makes you look like an idiot. Grind core is a sub genre of metal, so in all technicality it is still metal just so you know. If you are going to have such strong opinions at least make them sound intelligent.

-core is not metal. Where and how do you come to that conclusion? It is a derivative of hardcore, meaning it came from hardcore punk. Thus, -core. just because it may have distortion and guttural vocals doesn’t automatically make it a metal subgenre, these two are vastly different. I’m sorry, but you’ve made yourself sound like an idiot. Read up and educate yourself so you don’t make a fool of yourself in public again, but I’m sure you will with your Skrillex haircut.

Classic heavy-metal. They have three songs that probably everyone knows whether they like the band, or the genre or not. But over the years they have become more pop-rock than anything, and it’s truly a disgrace.

If i were to say "I'm trying to get into heavier music, could you recommend me something?" how would you respond?

Pay attention to the blog, and actually read what we have to say. Then, take one of the bands you are interested in and go plug it into last.fm. You have a brain, and an opinion, I’m sure from there you could formulate what you do and don’t like. Happy hunting.

Another melodic death metal band from Finland. They are a bit different when it comes to melodeath, they don’t allow the melodic factor to completely overwhelm their sound. This is controversial to some fans, because they don’t stick to the long, overdone guitar melodies. They are certainly a band who is willing to work to make themselves better. Also, Years in Waste is certainly a waste of an album, but they did learn form it and I think the change in vocalist and keyboardist absolutely helped. From this album on, they were less intense than the previous two, and softer. Overall, I think they’re a band who will always be working on their sound.

They basically created the genre and coined the term “Djent”. That itself is enough to write them off. We’re not into bands that constantly go “chugga, chugga, chugga” no matter what kind of time signatures they use.

I was actually countering the fact you called them average black metal, you meant average as in out how good they are I thought you meant average as how run of the mill they are.

Including jazz and other “weird things” doesn’t automatically make it “good”. I can play kazoo in a black metal band, that’s weird too, but it doesn’t mean it’s going to be good and hold up to the greats of the genre. Fast and technical isn’t always the answer to the equation of being great. Sometimes bands that use rather simple riffage are great, that keeps up with the saying of “less is more”. Different things work for different people.

Paradise lost? Like their first 4 albums. and what about Atheist?

It’s kind of hard to say about Paradise Lost, they were one of the big 3 of death/doom in England, along with Anathema and My Dying Bride, played a large part in its formation and influenced a lot of bands since then. The first 4 albums are pretty good releases, they were unique in their own right and seem to have held positive reviews throughout all these years. The one major disappointment about them is that they just completely collapsed after that and have struggled to return to form, they’ve showed a few glimmers of hope, but they just can’t seem to do it.

As for Atheist, they’re your typical death metal band, not good, not bad, average I would say. They never really stood out to me in being spectacular.

opinions on king diamond/mercyful fate?

The first couple of Mercyful Fate albums are classics for heavy metal in the 80’s, especially Melissa, after that they were not too special. Sorry, I’m not a fan at all of King Diamond’s solo albums, very disappointing for me.
